Teeth Extractions

In some cases, it may be in the best interest of the patient to have a tooth removed entirely. This process is known as extraction, and it is most commonly provided when a tooth has experienced severe damage or is causing problems for other teeth. Our goal when providing a tooth extraction is to ensure that the procedure is as quick and easy as possible for the patient.

The dental experts at Fairfield Smiles offer multiple types of sedation to ensure that the patient experiences minimal-to-no discomfort during a tooth extraction. The types of dental sedation that we offer include local anesthetics, laughing gas, oral sedation and IV sedation. The type of sedation that we provide will typically depend on the intensity of the tooth extraction and the patient’s overall tolerance to pain. Whenever sedation is provided, the process if carefully monitored to ensure the patient’s safety and overall well-being.

Before removing a tooth, we start by taking digital X-rays of the area. This helps us to determine the safest possible method for removing the tooth. We then provide any sedation necessary. Once the tooth has been removed, we must control any bleeding. The patient will be instructed to bite down on a piece of gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. This will allow a blood clot to form at the extraction site. The blood clot must not be disturbed in any way once it has formed. For that reason, patients are told to avoid using drugs or alcohol, drinking with a straw, rinsing vigorously and exercising intensely for at least 24 hours following an extraction.

The healing process for a tooth extraction typically takes place over the course of a few days. During this time, the patient should use an ice pack on their outer cheek to reduce swelling. After the swelling has subsided, a warm compress can be applied in order to provide comfort to the area. The patient can also rinse out their mouth with warm salt water to clean the area. Patients are encouraged to avoid tough and chewy foods during recovery, as they may cause unnecessary discomfort. By following these guidelines, a patient can help ensure that recovery is completed as quickly as possible. Once the patient has healed, we can then discuss potential tooth-replacement options if needed.

If you require a tooth extraction, the team at Fairfield Smiles will work to ensure that the process is as smooth and comfortable as possible. We will then work with you to help you fully restore the quality of your oral health. Please call us at 203-423-3833 to schedule an appointment.
