Sedation Dentistry

Dental sedation is provided to help a patient manage discomfort and anxiety both immediately before and during dental treatment. Our experts do an excellent job of properly balancing a patient’s level of sedation so that they are kept both comfortable and safe during a dental procedure. With the patient relaxed, our experts can focus solely on providing the best treatment possible.

At Fairfield Smiles, we offer several types of dental sedation. The type that is provided will typically depend on the intensity of the procedure and the overall needs of the patient. Most of our patients report that the sedation we provide is highly effective in helping them remain comfortable and calm during treatment.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthetics are used strictly for the management of pain. They are applied by injection directly to the site of treatment as a way of numbing the immediate area. With the area numb, the patient will experience reduced pain during the treatment that is provided. After the procedure is complete and the medicine wears off, the patient should quickly regain full feeling and sensation in the area. The important thing to remember with a local anesthetic is that it is only used for pain, and it will do nothing do directly reduce any anxiety that a patient may experience; however, a local anesthetic can provide comfort in helping a patient know that they will not experience major pain or discomfort during a procedure.

Oral Sedation

A patient receiving oral sedation will consume a pill shortly before treatment. This medicine will help the patient to remain calm and relaxed while dental treatment is provided. When the medicine goes into effect, the patient will remain relatively aware of their overall surroundings; however, they will feel very calm and relaxed. It will usually take a few hours for the medicine to wear off. The patient should have no negative recollection of the experience.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is an inhaled vapor that is provided immediately prior to dental treatment. In order to administer the substance, the patient will wear a special mask over their nose. They must then breathe in through their nose until the medicine takes its effect. If the patient was feeling anxious or nervous about treatment, those feelings should very quickly subside. The gas can then be continuously administered to help the patient remain calm and relaxed throughout the entirety of the procedure. The patient will very quickly return to normal once the gas is no longer being provided.

IV Sedation

IV sedation refers to medicine that is provided intravenously. This type of sedation can be used to manage both pain and anxiety very effectively. By injecting the medicine into the veins, the sedation goes into effect very quickly. Our experts can then continuously adjust the level of sedation that is provided based on the intensity of the procedure.

Sedation can help make dental treatment more comfortable and less stressful for you. Our experts are happy to discuss our different sedation options prior to your treatment. Please call us at 203-423-3833 to schedule an appointment.
