Root Canal Treatment

Also referred to as endodontic therapy, root canal treatment is provided when the inner pulp of a tooth has been damaged by infection or decay. The treatment involves accessing the inside of the tooth to clean out any damaged and infected material that is present. Our experts work to ensure that root canal treatment is as quick and comfortable as possible.

The inner pulp of a tooth reaches all the way down to the root in the jawbone. It is a very serious issue when this tissue becomes damaged or infected. A tooth with infected inner pulp is essentially rotting from the inside out. If the condition is not treated quickly, the tooth can eventually die, and it will need to be removed. Root canal treatment is designed to prevent the need for extraction by removing the infected material that is damaging the tooth. Some signs that root canal treatment is needed include a severe toothache, temperature sensitivities, inflamed and tender gums and recurring abscess on the gums.

When providing root canal treatment, we start by taking digital X-rays. This is done to determine the full extent of the damage. Before we begin the procedure, a dental dam will be placed around the tooth. This is used to keep the tooth dry and to prevent the infection from spreading while the inner structure is accessed. We then use advanced dental tools to enter the inside of the tooth from the top. From there, our experts will clean out the entire structure.

The procedure is then continued by flushing out the root canals of the tooth. To do this, we use an antimicrobial liquid that is designed to eliminate harmful bacteria. The canals will be flushed out all the way down to the root surface of the jawbone. We then initiate the healing process using special medicated fillings. These fillings will promote healing, and they provide important structure and strength for the treated tooth. The procedure is completed by capping the tooth with a dental crown. This restoration will prevent fractures, and it will help keep the tooth protected during recovery. Once the tooth is healthy, it can be used in the same way as any other tooth. The restoration should remain intact indefinitely with proper treatment and care.

If the inner structure of your tooth has been damaged due to infection or decay, a root canal procedure may be able to prevent the need for extraction. The experts at Fairfield Smiles will be able to determine if root canal treatment is right for you. Please call us at 203-423-3833 to schedule an appointment.
