Dental Crowns and Bridges

It is never easy when significant dental damage occurs, as it can ruin the look of a person’s smile and make simple oral tasks difficult. When a tooth has experienced severe damage or has been lost entirely, a crown or bridge may be used to restore appearance and function.

Dental crowns or bridges require two visits to our practice. This is because all of our crowns and bridges are custom-made from impressions that are taken of the patient’s teeth ensuring that the restoration looks as natural as possible and blends in seamlessly with their other teeth. The process works by taking impressions during the first visit, then having the restoration built in a dental laboratory and finally having it applied during the second visit. Our crowns and bridges are made of porcelain, an outstanding material that is known for its natural appearance and great functionality.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped appliance that is installed at the site of a severely damaged or missing tooth. When restoring a damaged tooth, the crown will be placed over the existing structure and “cap” the tooth. When used to replace a missing tooth, the crown will be secured to a dental implant. Crowns may also be used on healthy teeth to support dental bridges by keeping the replacement teeth in the bridge steady and secure at all times. At Fairfield Smiles, we always work to ensure that our crowns function flawlessly and look just like your natural teeth.

It is necessary to make some preparations before installing a dental crown. If the crown is being used to restore a tooth, the existing structure must be prepped. This usually involves shaving off some tooth enamel so that the crown can fit properly. If the crown is replacing a missing tooth, we will need to install a dental implant into the jawbone. Once it is time to apply the custom-made crown, it will be secured using a dental-grade adhesive. This will keep it steady at all times.

A dental bridge is provided when a patient is missing multiple teeth in a row. Dental crowns will be placed on the teeth around the gap and will support replacement teeth in the middle. Most patients think of the two crowns as the “ends” of the bridge, while the new teeth in the middle “bridge” the gap between them. Each portion is custom-made based on the unique needs of the patient so that the restoration looks very natural and provides outstanding function. With the support of the dental crowns, the bridge will remain secure and steady in any situation.

Our experts can restore the look and function of your lost or damaged teeth with our crowns and bridges. A visit to our practice will allow us to determine the best restoration option for you. Please call us at 203-423-3833 to schedule an appointment.
